The Electric Car Guest Drive event held in Newport Beach near Irvine at Bonita Canyon Sports Park reflected the laid back vibe of the tony beach city. Educational reps from Verengo Solar shared the spirit of ahoha in a dialog that weaved a deeply felt philosophy of care for the earth and ocean throughout the daylong discussion of the technical how-to of fueling your car on sunshine. A sincere mahalo to the braddahs from Verengo who spent the afternoon with EV Quorum.
The lineup of EVs available to guest drive included the Tesla Model S, Fiat 500e and Ford Focus EV. The black Cadillac ELR drew a lot of attention and made for quite a contrast alongside Patrick Sullivan's red Tesla Model S performance signature edition.
The Irvine event was notable partly because this day drew the visitor who traveled furthest of all ECGD attendees this year. Automotive blogger and competitive wakeboarder Chase Gregory flew in from Winterpark Florida. Chase was also in town to cover the Autonews LA seminar later that week. The entire quorum enjoyed getting to know Chase in person after a long thread of Linkedin, email and phone chats during the previous few months.
It was also a pleasure to see new EV Quorum member Luis Rivera again, attending his second ECGD event this spring. Luis made the trek from San Diego to Orange County, this time bringing three generations of his familia to the parkside gathering. Gracias amigo.
This day's kudo goes to EV Quorum member and Irvine local Dan Kopshever, who not only brought his Toyota Prius to this event and the previous day's meet-up in Chino Hills, but helped set up and pack out as well.
A triple thanks to EV Quorum members Patrick Sullivan and Jana McDonough who made Newport Beach their third ECGD event of the season. Although her brother has owned a Model S for over a year, Jana had never driven one before the Electric Car Guest Drive. Making up for lost time, Jana made the hour-long drive back down to San Diego in the Model S and experienced her first quick charge session at the new Tesla Supercharger in San Juan Capistrano. Somebody had to do it. Thanks for taking one for the team, Jana.
